Why customer images hold back print orders
Buyers upload logos on white boxes and phone photos that are too small to print. They give up, or they send a file that you must rework.
- A logo with a solid background cannot be placed on a mug or a shirt without manual cut-out work.
- A low-resolution photo looks soft in print, and nobody tells the customer until it is too late.
- Offering a design-help service by hand does not scale with order volume.
What good looks like. Example scenario: a buyer drops a company logo into the designer. One click removes the background, the low-resolution warning offers an upscale, and the design is ready to order without a message to your team.
How the AI image tools work
- A buyer uploads a photo to a product. A grey photo background would print as a box, and a low-resolution nudge offers an upscale.
- Selecting the photo shows the image toolbar with the AI tools: Remove background and Upscale.
- Remove background asks for the subject type, edge softness, high-detail mode, and a transparent or white output.
- The cut-out opens on a transparent grid with Erase and Restore brushes and Smart Select, so the buyer can refine it before applying.
- Upscale offers 2x or 4x for a small photo and shows the result before the buyer applies it.

The upscaled image is shown in a dialog with Apply upscaled image, so nothing changes on the canvas until the buyer agrees.

Upscale engine choice
Lanczos is the fast classical engine and is recommended for line art and text; Real-ESRGAN gives sharper results on photographs but is slower and uses more tokens.

Auto-suggest on upload
Optionally show an instant Upscale with AI suggestion on the canvas when a buyer adds a low-resolution image.

Safe with vector PDFs
Layers that print from an original PDF are not treated as low-resolution, so vector artwork is not replaced by a raster copy (2.15.1).

Limits to know
- Background removal on large images can take a minute or more; the plugin waits up to about 108 seconds (2.12).
- Real-ESRGAN upscaling is slower and uses more tokens than Lanczos; background removal is metered by image size.
- Each use spends AI tokens from the store owner's wallet; shoppers never see a token or a price.
- The designer's separate AI Design tab generates images with the merchant's own OpenAI API key. It is not paid with Cmsmart tokens and is not part of this product.

Which image tools are included?
AI Remove Background and AI Upscale. Both are in the image toolbar of the designer and are covered by the 2.12 release note together with Preflight.
Do customers pay for them?
No. The store owner pays in Cmsmart tokens. Customers never see a token or a price.
Can the buyer correct a cut-out?
Yes. The result opens with Erase and Restore brushes and Smart Select, and nothing is applied until the buyer clicks Apply background.
Which upscale engine should I use?
Lanczos is fast and recommended for line art and text. Real-ESRGAN is sharper on photographs but slower and uses more tokens.
Can I limit who may use them?
Yes. From 2.15 each tool has a toggle and an audience setting: everyone, signed-in members, or customers who have ordered.
Can you add other AI image features for our store?
Custom AI features are scoped and quoted per project through the AI integration request. The designer's AI Design tab is separate and uses the merchant's own OpenAI key.
